About Vanathi Srinivasan
Vanathi Srinivasan has been associated with BJP for almost three decades since1993 and has held various key positions within the party. She was appointed as National President of Mahila Morcha, Women’s Wing of BJP in October 2020.
She recently won in the Coimbatore -South constituency defeating MNM party founder and actor Kamal Haasan, in May 2021; this is her first stint as an MLA in Tamil Nadu.
She is a lawyer by profession, orator, social-activist, author and a philanthropist, and also one of the few politicians to deliver polite and precise political answers on live-television debates.
She hails from Coimbatore and belongs to an agricultural family. She attained her primary education in Coimbatore and did higher studies in Covai and Chennai.
She became a member of ABVP – Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, an all India student’s organization affiliated to Rashtriya Swayam SevakSangh, in 1988 while she was a student at PSG Arts & Science College at Coimbatore. She was initially appointed as ABVP’s college unit Secretary and later promoted to City Joint Secretary for Coimbatore. While pursuing her UG Law program at Chennai, she was elevated to the post of State Joint Secretary in ABVP between 1990-1991 & 1991- 1992, and was also made its National Executive Member.
She started practicing law at Chennai High Court in 1993 and received ‘Outstanding Women Lawyer’ award in 2012, from Mr. Iqbal, the then Chief Justice of Madras High Court.
Her knowledge as a lawyer and her skill in articulating her thoughts to words in the most astute manner helped her win her debut case. During her active career as a lawyer she served as a Standing Counsel for the Government of India and for the Southern Railway from 2002 to 2004.
After stepping into active politics, she has been maintaining balance between her career as lawyer and politician.
Since 2009 she began focusing mostly on political career and contested in Tamil Nadu Assembly elections twice, once in 2011 and again in 2016.
She served as the State General Secretary, Mahila Morcha,Tamil Nadu’s Women’ Wing, General Secretary and Vice President. Vanathi’s commitment to the BJP and its nation-building goals has been much appreciated by the party and public alike at several occasions.
She has been part of Indian diplomats’ delegation at US’ Department of State under the aegis of American Council of Young Political Leaders in 2010 and spent a month meeting various Congressional members and Senators in Washington DC and State of Michigan.
She was invited as resource person to address a women empowerment session in September 2019 in the World Hindu Conference at Chicago for celebration of 125th year anniversary of Swami Vivekanda.
She was invited to deliver keynote address in January 2020 in the grand gala event of Tamil Heritage month organised by Canadian National Tamil Forum.
She has authored two books ‘Women- You are the Great’ and ‘Why we need CAA’
She has extensively contributed as a social activist and has been notably involved in provision of RO water plants, establishment of library for SC Girls Hostel, standing up against vulgarity in movies, contribution in Tsunami relief and 2015 Chennai floods; she has adopted her native village in Coimbatore.
She has led several demonstrations seeking Total Alcohol Prohibition in TN and filed Public Interest Litigations in Madras High Court for closure of liquor shops.
Most recently during the lockdowns she made continuous requests to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and State Government to keep the shutters of TASMAC shops permanently locked in order to provide some relief to the wives of alcoholic husbands.
She initiated measures to provide toilets to all the houses/huts in villages to avoid open defecation, conducted medical camps, initiated tree plantations in villages, collaborated with NGO-Seva Bharati, for tailoring classes for 50 women and arranging bank loans for the ones who were unable to afford their own sewing machines.
In November 2020 as part of Modi’s Daughter’ scheme, she announced 5 years of financial support to 100 girl children living solely under the care of their mothers in Covai and assured to support the best performing children.
As a politician she is primarily focused on helping the underprivileged, down trodden women and has been actively creating awareness about the innumerable public welfare schemes benefiting girl-child.
